Winners will be selected by Celebrity Judges and People’s Choice votes. Highest votes win. Anyone may taste and vote! A free-will donation chili feed will follow immediately after judging so none of the awesome chili goes to waste!
RULES/INSTRUCTIONS:
Simply fill out the entry form, pay the $10 prize contribution upon entry, and adhere to the following rules! Contestants may enter their chili recipe as an individual or a team. Chili will be prepared at home no more than 24 hours prior to the event. Lets be clear, when we say chili, we're talking homestyle chili here. What defines homestyle? According *official* chili cook-off rules:
Chili with any kind of meat, or combination of meats, and/or vegetables cooked with beans, chili peppers, various spices and other ingredients. Homestyle chili may be any color. If nothing else, beans are required. Preference is not given to either cut meat, ground meat, shredded meat or cubed meat. Seafood is allowed. Vegan and vegetarian options allowed as well.
1. Each contestant must cook two gallons (basically a big crockpot full) of chili using their own selected recipe and ingredients. The cooking period must occur within 24 hours of event. Meat may be treated, pre-cut or ground, but must be cooked. Each contestant is solely responsible to make sure that no ingredient is undercooked and/or that there is no risk of food borne illness.
2. Chili must be brought and kept in crock pot or other warming container that will be placed for entry no later than 10:30 AM. Chili must reach a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Contestants should bring an extension cord with them in case that is needed.
3. Contestants are responsible to submit a contestant entry form at least 24 hours prior to the event.
4. Contestants may garnish their chili however they like. The more creative, the better.
The event space will provide the following:
Sample cups/spoons for tasting.
Bowls, napkins, and utensils for the following chili feed.
Tables for crockpots and power strips.
Water, coffee, and cups.
Fresh-baked cinnamon rolls.
JUDGING CRITERIA
Judges will base votes off of the following criteria:
Color -- Does the chili look appetizing? Does it look bright and colorful or dull and bland?
Aroma -- Does it smell good? Does the aroma make you want to dig in?
Consistency -- How is the meat-to-sauce ratio? It the texture appealing?
Taste -- How is the flavor? Do the ingredients blend well, or is one too overpowering? Does the first bite make you want another one?
Aftertaste -- Once you swallow, is there a spicy taste ("bite") that stays on your tongue? Is it pleasant?
MOST CREATIVE DISPLAY: Is the presentation fun, creative, exciting, funny, etc? Feel free to decorate your space however you choose to make your chili the most enticing!
People’s Choice will follow the following criteria:
Which chili could you eat an entire bowl of? ;) That’s it! Bring your friends and family to support and vote for you!
Tentative Schedule:
10:00am-11:00am: Participants arrive for check-in and set up
11:00am-11:30am: Celebrity judging begins
11:30am: Public tasting/judging begins
2:00pm: End of public tasting and voting.
2:30pm: Festival Award Ceremony—Winners Announced/Coronation of New Reigning Chili Champ!
